Solar Electricity - FAQ
- How does it work?
Grid connect solar systems are often located where grid electricity is available. The electricity produced by your solar system directs power back to the electricity grid. Your solar panels send DC electricity to the inverter which converts it to AC electricity (household appliances typically run off AC electricity…..). Supplying power to the grid makes the property owner (you) receive a credit or a payment for that electricity
- What does grid connect mean and what is a grid feed in tariff?
Grid connected systems that send power back to the grid are compensated by a grid feed-in tariff. There are two different types of tariffs. A net feed-in tariff pays for any surplus energy created by the system. A gross feed-in tariff pays a premium on all the electricity produced by the system. The amount paid is always above market rate and varies from state to state and power provider.
- How long will my grid connect solar power system last?
Photovoltaic solar panels have been tested over the decades showing some reduction in power output after approx. 20 years, mainly due to dulling of the glass surface which causes the panels to reflect more light. There are solar panels delivering power in Australia today that were installed more than 30 years ago. The electronic components such as inverters, being the most sensitive, will last 10 -15 years.
- What about the inverter, how long will it last?
Electronic components such as the inverter are the most sensitive. With a system properly designed, installed and maintained by our Adtech Eco install team the inverter should last 15 years or so before requiring service.
- What affects the amount of solar energy my system produces?
Regardless of the seasons, the strength of energy generated will be affected by the amount of contamination - being dust and moisture, is in the air, the amount of cloud cover and any shading of the solar panels. Summer is usually when most of your solar energy will be produced. The average solar energy converted to electricity in most areas within Australia has been calculated to an average of around 4-5 hours per day. Slight variations in energy production may occur depending upon the orientation and pitch of your roof.
- What happens on cloudy days?
A grid connected system means you are still tied to the mains power supply, any power required will come directly from the mains grid.
- Regarding roof orientation. Is north really better?
Yes it is for all of us who live in the southern hemisphere. Solar panels facing in a northerly aspect will be the most efficient for a higher production of electricity. Should your roof not have a northerly aspect we at Adtech Eco can custom design an efficient system to suit your aspect.
- How do I know if my building is suitable for a solar power system?
Most properties are suitable for renewable energy. Things to consider are:
- Orientation
- Roof area available
- Shadows which may affect the efficiency of your system
- Your current electricity usage
- What costs are involved in installing a grid connect solar power system?
Cost will vary according to the design and size of the system, the type of panels and inverter installed. After current rebates, a small system could start at around $3,000. Larger systems are available for higher returns however these systems would be custom designed. The grid feed-in tariffs being offered by most states make installing a solar system a wise investment. Returns of 10% to 30% are being realised by investors. Call Adtech Eco to find out how.
- What size system should I install?
This all depends on whether you want the electricity you make to supplement your electricity bill or completely cover your electricity bill, Every property is very different regarding their energy consumption. Adtech Eco offer individual solutions for every property and property owner. We suggest contacting us (see our contact page) with the appropriate information and one of our consultants will provide you with sound advice for your situation.
In today's ever changing world it is a worthwhile exercise to implement energy efficient strategies. Using energy efficient lighting and appliances will significantly reduce energy costs. Cost of power will only increase therefore it would be wise to look at these strategies.
- What warranty can I expect from Adtech Eco?
Adtech Eco sells quality products and has dedicated installers who stand by their workmanship:
- Solar Panels: All our solar panels have a 25-year performance warranty.
- Inverter: minimum 5-year warranty on all inverters.
- Mounting System: 10-year product warranty (manufacturer)
- Workmanship: 12 month warranty on workmanship (installer)
- What's the difference between monocrystalline, thin film or polycrystalline solar panels?
Monocrystalline is slightly more efficient and therefore the panel is slightly smaller than a polycrystalline panel. Cost per watt is similar so roof space is usually the deciding factor as to which panel is used. Thin film panels are much larger again and are considered a more efficient panel in shady conditions. Unless your property suffers from shade we would strongly recommend monocrystalline for grid connect situations.
- What affects the installation costs?
Adtech Eco has a standard installation rate which is based on the system being installed on a single storey pitched metal roof in close proximity to the meter box, with no additional or major work required in the meter box. Additional costs will be incurred for a flat or tiled roof, two storey building, fitting solar panels on more than one plane, or any equipment/meter box upgrades and extended warranties.
- What about insurance protection for my solar system?
Most insurers will allow you to include the system under your home and contents insurance. If in doubt, contact your insurer.
- Can I upgrade to a larger system down the track?
If you are planning to install a system with the intention to increase to a larger system in the future, Adtech Eco will need to plan your initial installation to accommodate the upgrade. It's easy to say "just add a few more panels" but if you haven't planned for it, you may be in for a rude shock.
So you've planned in advance and installed a larger inverter in anticipation of upgrading… Also a bad decision as an underpowered system will be extremely inefficient until you upgrade. If you really want to take this approach, then we need to select the right inverter for the specifications of your system. In most cases you will find it is advisable to go the maximum size from day one. The increased return on investment will justify this decision.
- Is there any maintenance involved?
Yes. Adtech Eco recommends maintenance be performed every 18 months. This will ensure that your system will always be performing at its optimum. Having your system maintained will ensure all electrical components and connections are in good working order. The face of the solar panels are treated and clean themselves every time it rains.
- Is it a reliable investment?
A solar energy system has no moving parts, making it one of the most reliable investments. When you consider the return on investment can be as high as 30%, it's hard to find a better investment that not only makes you money, but helps our environment. It makes good sense.
